The Los Angeles headquarters for Catellus Development Corporation is located on the 4th and 5th floors of the historic Bradbury Building in downtown Los Angeles and provided a rare opportunity to generate a minimal architectural gesture within an extensive historic context.
Given the monumental status of the Bradbury Building, all alterations and spatial divisions added were treated as individual insertions into each space. The dichotomy created by the dialogue between the new walls and the existing ones allows each to stand independently while also complementing the other. At different areas throughout the suite, carefully placed materials reference the historic while also celebrating possibility within the old-meets-new architecture.
Because existing floor plates are significantly smaller here than in current buildings, sliding panel openings and interior glass were incorporated to conserve space and create spatial interest and perspective as you advance from room to room. Sloped ceilings give visual interest while also providing circulation cues to those using the rooms. All furnishings were kept minimal in aesthetic, as was the custom designed millwork. A corporate art collection was also considered during the layout of the entire suite.
